The incredible journey of Berwyn’s JP Weber; Why we lost Wayne Sporting Goods; Real estate rumblings in Radnor; Shipley grad’s ‘Wild Life’; Claytor Noone Plastic Surgery; Anti-aging medicine; Personalized test prep & more

January 16, 2020 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

JP Weber clearly remembers the day he died.

“I can’t go back there,” he thought on June 3, 2016. “I’m never going in there again.”

An elite loan originator for PNC Bank, Weber quit his job that late spring morning and walked, blindly, off a cliff. The old JP – people-pleasing, Percocet-popping, life-of-the-party JP – long crumbling, collapsed completely. And ever-so-slowly, canvas by canvas, rose up and pieced himself back together.

Pinstripe-suited Joseph Paul Weber was buried that Friday morning. Ponytailed, self-actualized artist @JohnHamster was born.

What some call a complete mental breakdown, Weber, 43, calls The Undoing.

School’s out for summer.

As of this week, it’s out forever … for star Stoga teacher Deb Ciamacca.

For years, the former Marine and beloved U.S. Government teacher has urged her students to get off the sidelines. “Democracy’s not a spectator sport,” she’d tell them.

After speaking out about gun safety here – and on national and international TV – she put her career where her mouth was.

Devon Anthropologie to swap out deceptive ‘skinny’ mirrors; Plus, Casablanca spices up Bryn Mawr; The Simple Greek feeds Wayne; F45 trains Paoli; Catwalk for Wings & lots more

March 21, 2019 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

Hey, Mirror, Mirror: Who’s the slimmest of them all? Shoppers trying on clothes at the new Devon Anthropologie.

Readers have been telling us for months that Anthro’s dressing-room mirrors make them look a tad taller and a smidge thinner than they actually are.

Thanks for the flattering image, the women told us, but, uh, no thanks.

DOUBLE ISSUE: Alarming fire news; ‘Life Time effect’; Go float in KOP; Space for all abilities; Easttown trees; new Oath Pizza & Whole Foods. Plus, all-local gift ideas (w/ SAVVY savings!)

December 13, 2018 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

You smell smoke, call 9-1-1, first responders rush on over.

But what if – gulp – there aren’t enough first responders?

That’s the scary scenario laid out in a new report about the state of volunteer firefighting in PA.

Numbers have fallen off a cliff: from 300,000 volunteers in the 1970s to 38,000 today. The report calls the drop-off nothing short of a “public safety crisis.”

While the situation’s not as dire here, our Main Line fire companies – staffed largely by unpaid volunteers – are hurting for help.

SAVVY SOCIAL: LaBelle rocks Temple gala; Remembering Tricia Cuddy; Bryn Mawr Film, Surrey & Main Line Art Center galas; Kinney fashion show; Bag Bingo; Wynnewood wow home & more

May 5, 2017 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

A record-breaking 1,100 people partied with Patti at Temple Auxiliary’s Acres of Diamond’s gala, raising $1.3 million for critical, life-saving care.

A sparkling night at the Please Touch Museum: Guests took a spin on the carousel and bid on silent auction items, then sashayed down a red carpet to dinner under a huge custom tent.

Star power: Two Main Liners! Emcee was Flyers’ anthem singer Lauren Hart, longtime pal of Lindy Snider, wife of Larry Kaiser and daughter of Flyers’ co-founder Ed Snider. Patti LaBelle sparkled in Philadelphia Eagles Kelly green. Her private concert brought down the house.

Undocumented on the Main Line; Louella heads east & lots of comings & goings around town

March 8, 2017 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

They live among us, hiding but in plain sight.
They mow our lawns, mind our kids, cook our food, clean our homes.
They are Mexicans, living and working on the Main Line.
Some, of course, work under the table.
Others receive paychecks, have payroll taxes withheld, and file yearly U.S. tax returns.
Just like us.
But in many ways, not like us at all.
Because they are here without papers and have little reason to believe they’ll ever get them.
One such family – living in a rented, single-family home on the western Main Line – asked us to share their story.
They wanted us to put a human face on the immigration crisis.
But, of course, we cannot.
At least, not literally.
