Top Ten Reasons We’re Going to Devon … And You Should, Too!

May 29, 2018 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

#10   IT’S WORLD CLASS.  And getting classier every year.

Some of the BEST riders in the world are here, including three out of four on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Show Jumping Team: McClain Ward (9-time Devon Grand Prix champ), Beezie Madden and Kent Farrington, now ranked #1 in the world.  Or catch a rising star like Devin Ryan. (A happy naming coincidence? We think not.)

T/E probes policy after alleged gun threat & hate speech rattle middle school parents; Gotta go to Main & Vine & Devon Horse Show; #SaveStoneleigh, shore dunes and much more

May 24, 2018 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

With recent school shootings very much on their minds, some Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School parents are taking aim at T/E’s response to an alleged threat of gun violence and bullying.

They sent e-mails, made phone calls, met with school officials.

Then, scores of them showed up at a school board meeting Monday night.

The district was ready. Message received, loud and clear.

The Superintendent announced the creation of parent focus groups to evaluate T/E’s threat-response policy and suggest changes as needed. He said the district will also explore “best practices” of other districts across the country and review relevant research.

And the day after the meeting, the principal of T/E Middle School sent an extraordinarily detailed e-mail to parents explaining how, as a parent himself, he takes students’ safety personally.

The hubbub started in early February. It simmered, then boiled over last week after a TEMS family, the Nissenbaums, told their story to the AP.

And it ran in newspapers across the country.

Ex-Stoga aide admits student sexual assaults; New Bryn Mawr BYOB; Fresh ‘Canvas’ for downsizing boomers; Teegarden dogs; Our Closet; Mister Sprinkle & more

November 30, 2017 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

Guilty as charged. A former teacher’s aide has admitted to the repeated sexual assault of a Conestoga sophomore – in his school office, his car and her bedroom – during the 2016-2017 school year.

After pleading not guilty at his April arraignment, Arthur Phillips changed his plea to guilty last Tuesday and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in state prison.

If Phillips had been younger, Chester County Judge Patrick Carmody said he wouldn’t have accepted the plea deal. “You’re 67, Do you understand that you may never leave jail, that this might be a life sentence?” he asked the defendant.

Phillips said quietly that he understood.

The judge was clearly disgusted by Phillips’ crimes.

Summer ’17 Catch-up: Life Time KOP’s sinkhole; remembering Radnor’s N. Mora; Skinny Pizza (?!); Nova’s new Inn; Crime news; Fall Classic; Mt. Joy & more

September 7, 2017 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

/>By all accounts, things were going swimmingly at the area’s fanciest new fitness “resort,” Life Time Athletic in KOP.

Until they weren’t.

On Saturday, Aug. 5, staff noticed the water level in the indoor pool had suddenly dropped a few feet and the decking in one corner had collapsed.

Uh-oh.

The club promptly closed the pool, drained the water and demolished it.

The culprit? A sinkhole – although management’s e-mails to members never used the “s” word, referring only to the pool’s “inadvertent” closure and “required repairs.”

Not the sort of splash Life Time envisioned when opened for its first summer season in June.

Social edition: Giant Steps for Sarcoma; LM Conservancy, Riverbend & JCHAI galas; Fred’s Footsteps GNO; Devereux does Devon & The Cottage kicks off in Wayne

June 16, 2017 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

Braving steamy temps, throngs of sarcoma warriors, survivors, their families and friends – 1,300 strong – walked or raced through Wilson Farm Park in Chesterbrook on June 11.

The teams: Identifiable by their custom tees, at least 30 teams turned out for the 5K chip-timed race and one-mile walk, many led by people battling sarcoma on crutches, wheelchairs and with prosthetic limbs.

Gang green: Some 80 family and friends wore green t-shirts in honor of Pat Maher of Devon, who tragically lost a four-year-battle with sarcoma last June at age 47. Pat led his green-shirted team in the first Steps to Cure Sarcoma event two years ago.

The hometown hero host: Conestoga ’06 star and Ewing’s sarcoma survivor Mark Herzlich, 29, who will play his 7th season for the New York Giants this fall.

Hatted hopefuls bling it on for “Jewels of Devon” Ladies Day contest

The gathering: Ladies paid $65 in advance, $80 at the door for light bites, live music, “Devontinis” and bubbly, and goody bags that included tickets to a long list of raffle prizes donated by Country Fair vendors. Just over 130 ticketholders picked up paddles to compete in the contest. A bit of a headache in recent years, party crashers were kept out by a barricade of picnic tables and volunteers checking wristbands.

Devon is fired up over DanDan.

It hasn’t officially opened but the new restaurant – at the old Ella’s near the Devon Acme – is already packin’ ’em in.

Just like it does in Center City.

And for good reason.

Bryn Mawr’s new BYOB & wine school; Dogs to horse around at Devon; Ardmore (& Target?) rising; Moms’ gifts & more

May 9, 2017 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

The Conestoga High School hazing scandal was a big fat, tragic mess. But look at what Penn State and one of its fraternity presidents – a young man from Malvern – are dealing with.

Brendan Young, 21, an avid golfer whom you may have seen play at Chester Valley Golf Club or working at Golf Galaxy in Berwyn, is one of 18 Beta Theta Pi brothers facing criminal charges after a pledge died in their frat house in February.

In all 200 charges were lodged against the Penn State junior.

Another local defendant, Nick Kubera, who graduated from Downingtown H.S. last year, is facing 43.

While all 18 are in hot water, the charges are scalding for Young and some of his frat brothers: involuntary manslaughter and stuff like felony aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and hazing.

Horrific.

Shhhhhh.

Carol Burnett paid a hush-hush visit to overjoyed folks at Daylesford Crossing senior living Monday, charming one and all.

Nope, she didn’t know a soul there.
