Double issue: SoulCycle Ardmore’s Ryan Lewis leads w/ truth, Pride & joy (w/ video); One-on-one with ‘Mare of Easttown’ creator Brad Ingelsby; Cool new spots & hot topics; Aether Medicine’s novel Rx for pain & lots more

June 30, 2021 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

The Main Line teems with talented trainers.

But we’ve found no one (yet) who brings as much of himself to the table and inspires a more rabid following than SoulCycle Master Instructor Ryan Lewis.

It goes way deeper than his jammed classes, his Instagram eye candy and legendary Taylor Swift rides.

Twenty-three times a week – 16 classes at Soul in Ardmore and Center City, seven more at Barry’s Bootcamp – Ryan empties himself fully, baring all, daring all. Lay it all out, I’ll pull you out, I’ll lift you up. We’re in this together.

St. Joe’s Prep alums may recall Ryan as the skinny theater kid who came out to 50 male classmates during a religious retreat.

Meet Paoli’s 12-yr-old bike shop owner; Rallying for family of electrocuted T/E student; Catholic clash in Bryn Mawr; Tasting DePaul’s Table in Ardmore; Vax to normal; Lifestyle Changes; Jess Hinds’ family flics & more

June 2, 2021 / By Caroline O'Halloran / /

A 12-year-old just opened his own bike shop in Paoli.

Yup, you read that right.

Dom Fixes Bikes, aka DFB, is owned and operated by Dom Pecora. The Valley Forge Middle School sixth-grader ditched modeling and acting gigs – he’s walked runways and appeared on national TV – for the greasier charms of bike chains, tubes and lubes.

Calling Dom merely precocious sells him short. This kid’s got an entrepreneur’s moxie, a mechanic’s smarts and a salesman’s gift of gab.

Like the blessed spring that finally came, our fair ‘burbs are bursting with new life.

City-ish life.

Philly-esque goodies has been popping up in our own backyards: outdoor comedy clubs and concerts, wine and distillery tastings, assorted flea and farmer’s markets.

Bringing the biggest buzz lately? The roomy new rooftop bar at the Great American Pub and Lola’s Garden of earthly delights in Suburban Square. Both couldn’t be more trendy or timely, although they were both in the works before the pandemic.

With COVID cases falling and kids’ academic and emotional losses piling up, the drumbeat for fully reopening schools is getting louder by the minute.

If nearby districts and private schools can safely bring students back full-time, why can’t Lower Merion, Radnor and T/E? a growing chorus of public school parents wants to know.

Well, that chorus is being heard. Change is in the air.

Leslie had lost. Lana was gone.

There’s no way I’m getting this virus, thought Andy Phillips, as he set off on a run near his Chester Springs home in late March. He felt lousy that day, but at age 53, he was in great shape – eating right and exercising like mad.

“If you lined up ten of his friends, Andy was the healthiest,” says his wife Trish McDonough Phillips.

But try as he might, Andy couldn’t outrun COVID. He got the virus.

So did his son.

So did his father.

AnnaMarie Jones was living the suburban dream – happily married to a Rothman orthopedic surgeon, raising three kids in Radnor schools, and active in her church and community.

Life here was good.

The fact that her late father was Black and her mother is a first-generation white Sicilian American just wasn’t that big a deal.

Light-skinned, AnnaMarie has always been “white passing.”

She didn’t hide her biracial heritage; she just didn’t broadcast it.

Well, not anymore.
